Remember, Remember the 5th of November! - Guy Fawkes Night!!

Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I can think of no reason
Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t'was his intent
To blow up the King and Parli'ment.
Three-score barrels of powder below
To prove old England's overthrow;
By God's providence he was catch'd
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, let the bells ring.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!

Remember, remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason, why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.
Remember, remember, the fifth of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot!
A stick or a stake for King James' sake
Will you please to give us a fagot
If you can't give us one, we'll take two;
The better for us and the worse for you!

Guy Fawkes Night
(also known as Bonfire NightCracker NightFireworks Night) is an annual celebration on the evening of the 5th of November. It celebrates the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot of the 5th of November 1605 in which a number of Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in LondonEngland.

In the United Kingdom, celebrations take place in towns and villages across the country in the form of both private and civic events. They involve fireworks displays and the building of bonfires on which traditionally "guys" are burnt, although this practice is not observed regularly in modern times. These "guys" are traditionally effigies ofGuy Fawkes, the most famous of the Gunpowder Plot conspirators. Although the night is celebrated in York(Fawkes' hometown) some there do not burn his effigy, most notably those from his old school.[1][2] Before the fifth, children traditionally use the "guys" to request a "penny for the guy" in order to raise funds with which to buy fireworks.

In the United Kingdom, there are several foods that are traditionally consumed on Guy Fawkes Night (most people no longer follow this tradition):

In the Black Country, it is a traditional night for eating groaty pudding.[citation needed]

In Sussex, it is a major festival that centres on Lewes necessitating the closure of the town centre. The night also commemorates the Glorious Revolution and 17 local Protestant martyrs that were burnt at the stake during Marian Persecutions by the CatholicQueen Mary I[10]. The night begins with torchlight processions in costume by a number of local bonfire societies and culminates in six separate bonfires where effigies of Guy Fawkes, Pope Paul V and topical personalities are destroyed by firework and flame.

In Scotton, the locals do not burn effigies of Guy Fawkes due to the village's connection to him. Up until recently, the Catholic school Stonyhurst College, would avoid any celebration, because of their connection to the other plotters (three of them went to the school).

In Ottery St Mary, in Devon, burning barrels of tar are carried through the streets:

"Ottery St. Mary is internationally renowned for its tar barrels, an old custom said to have originated in the 17th century, and which is held on November 5th each year. Each of Ottery's central public houses sponsors a single barrel. In the weeks prior to the day of the event, November 5th, the barrels are soaked with tar. The barrels are lit outside each of the pubs in turn and once the flames begin to pour out, they are hoisted up onto local people's backs and shoulders. The streets and alleys around the pubs are packed with people, all eager to feel the lick of the barrels flame. Seventeen Barrels all in all are lit over the course of the evening. In the afternoon and early evening there are women's and boy's barrels, but as the evening progresses the barrels get larger and by midnight they weigh at least 30 kilos. A great sense of camaraderie exists between the 'Barrel Rollers', despite the fact that they tussle constantly for supremacy of the barrel. In most cases, generations of the same family carry the barrels and take great pride in doing so. ... Opinion differs as to the origin of this festival of fire, but the most widely accepted version is that it began as a pagan ritual that cleanses the streets of evil spirits.[11]

Guy Fawkes Night is less commonly celebrated in Northern Ireland, where autumn fireworks and bonfires are more commonly associated withHallowe'en[12].

Houston We Have a President! about time there batman!

So late last night/ early morning is when the states electoral votes started to role in.  I stayed up till 3 am...most states were coming in but my eyes would not stay open as i sat on the couch.  Im sad that I did not stay up the whole time.  But this is something that I will always remember.  It seems that the English are quit pleased with how the election turned out.
Maybe the US is finally turning a new leaf, and we won't get so many odd looks when you say im an American - let alone that Im from Texas. Im glad to have been part of this moment in history.  One day I plan to look back and tell my children's children.
Also, I am happy that yahoo had Obama's victory speech online still and that I was able to watch it :) I did like his speech.  It was very nice and I especially liked the story of the 106 old woman in Alabama.  You have just wonder how she felt.  Having seen things like the riots of 1960, seeing women and african-americans attain the right to vote, and lastly to finally vote for an african-american man and see him win and hold the highest office in the land.  I wonder how she feels that things can change and that change is possible, but to quote Obama "it might not happen in a year or even in a term" but change is possible.

love love  - hope you have a wonderful day
p.s. now that the election is over in the states the english are getting ready for Guy Fawlke's Night - ill explain what that is in my next post!!!

Barcelona & Halloween!!!

This past weekend I went to Barcelona with Kristen!!!! It was sooooooo much fun!!!! We meet Megan at the airport and went and dropped our stuff off at her apartment and then went and had lunch.  After lunch we made our way to viewing things around the city! First we saw Sagrada Familia, then we made our way to where they used to have bullfighting, next we saw this amazing hospital, and then made our way to a park where Gaudies' house is. It is an amazing park!!! If you ever are in Barcelona you have to go to this park!! We made our way back to the apartment and Megan went off to teach her one class for the weekend.  When she got back we went off and had tapas for dinner and got ready for the party that one of Megan's roommates was throwing for Halloween! The party was well under way when around 1:30/2 am we made our way to the club Piratas!!! It was a pirate club!!! It was hot as hell in there! We left around 4 am and stayed up for awhile talking with Martin - Megan's Polish roommate who doesn't speak english, but I remembered enough spanish to understand him and talk to him :D.  The next day we went and saw the Arc de Triomf, then made our way trough the park and we made our way to plaza catalonia...we then made our way to the Magic Fountain. OMG!!!! it is a fountain that sings and lights up!!!!! it is sooo cool!!!! Kristen, Megan, Chesney, Martin, & myself stayed up until Kristen and I had to leave to go back to London!  It was an amazing weekend in Barcelona!!

Up next election coverage!!! are you ready for this!

Finally a moment to breath!

So I finally have a moment to breath! and to tell all about Italy!!!!

Day 1! Rome
we arrived in Rome on Friday the 10th and we basically chilled at the hotel and walked around our area of town.  then we ate dinner and went to bed!

Day 2!! Rome continued!
So we rose early on Saturday the 11th to get ready for a day of sightseeing in Rome with Vastours! We started the day at the Vatican! I love that place!!!!! We made our way through the Vatican Museum! However, this time I got to see Rafael's rooms...which he only painted one room - in that room was the School of Athens! Also the floors have the marble that once lined the Colosseum...Catholics ;) After we finally finished the Vatican tour we went to lunch!!! OMG was it amazing....it was the best lasagna that I have ever had!!!! :D For the afternoon tour we went on a tour of ancient Rome! Basically we saw the forums and end up at the Colosseum! We arrived back at our hotel and we made our way to dinner and went back to the hotel and went to bed!

Day 3!!! Rome still continues!
We got up a littler later than yesterday! :)  We walked Rome in 11 hours! Yes you read that correctly 11 hrs!!!!!! that was crazy!!!!  We walked to the Triton Fountain, then to the Spanish steps, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, two piazzas, and the Colosseum!! and then we ate dinner and watched the sunset and the Colosseum lighting up! After taking pics of the lit up and then walked back to the Trevi Fountain to see it lit up at night - the best way to see it! - and made it back the hotel!!! We were super tired and just crashed!

Day 4!!!! Siena!
We got up at 10 and made our way to the train station! I wish that I didn't have to run around Siena to see a bunch of chruches and just had so time to soak up the vibes of the city.  I did meet this girl, Erin, who is studying abroad over in Siena.  She just told me all about the city.

Day 5!!!!! Siena (a tiny bit)  & Florence
We walked around Siena and saw the San s. Dominico, and Saint Katherine's something...i don't remember.  We then had lunch and caught a train to Florence.  When we arrived at the train station, we made our way to the taxi line. We end up with this lady who has the most outrageous cab ever!!! I wish that I had taken a picture of it.  I really believed that I was Alice and I had just fallen down the rabbit hole! It turns out that she gives free rides to sick children, which is super sweet.  It also makes sense as to why the car is so crazy.  When we made it to the hotel we took naps and then walked around a bit and found a place to eat, came back to the hotel and went to bed.

Day 6!!!!!! Florence
We woke up and began to walk around we went and saw the David!!!! ecckkk!  We then made our way and saw the Doumo and the Baptistry.  We then found a place to eat lunch and waited till it was 2pm for our trip to Pisa to begin! Once in Pisa we saw the Baptistry, the Cathedral, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa!!! Then we walked to this other square and saw what is now the University for the Sciences and it is apparently very hard to get in.... perfect scores are required.  Well in one of the buildings is where a man was sentence to die of starvation with his family, which became the story for the last circle of Dante's Inferno. It was very cool!  Then we left Pisa and made our way back to Florence.  We were dropped off at the train station, we got McDonald's from the train station and caught a cab back to the hotel to watch my super sweet sixteen and Clueless the tv show in Italian!

Day 7!!!!!!! Florence & trip to Venice
We walked to the Basilica of Sante Croce! This is where Michalanglo, Machiavelli, Gallelio, and Dante are buried and many more people! Also we made our way to the Pointe Vechio, ate lunch, and made our way to Dante's house.  Before for you actually get to Dante's house you come across the church that he attended.  In the church there are some very beautiful pictures of Dante and Beatrice.  After seeing Dante's house - we did not have time to go into it - we made our way back to the hotel and got our bags head for the train station to Venice!  It is a 3 hr. train ride.... but a very lovely one! When we finally got to Venice it was late and we were tired.

Day 8!!!!!!!! Venice!!
We walked around Venice seeing the sites.  We took a gondola ride and went to St. Marks square....full of tables and pigeons!!!! We then ate lunch and made our way to the departing point for a trip to three of Venice's Islands - Murano (glass making) Burano (?) (lace making) and something with a T ( it has a church on it).... we then made it back to the dock and went for dinner and saw the bridge that Venice is famous for... i can't remember the name!!  We made it back to the hotel and went to get gelato for our last night in Italy!

Day 9!!!!!!!!! Back to London! :)
All we did was wake up and go to airport to fly back to London!!! I was so happy to be back on familiar ground.  As much as i love Italy, I was ready to be back in London!!!!

that is all of my travels in Italy....sorry for no pictures but they are not on the computer :( :(

Adventures of a Night Club Hunting Gang and a Silly Girl with her Black Boots

Last Saturday was one of the guy's, Kyle, 22nd birthday.  He wanted to go to a jazz club but the one he wanted was closed due to a private party being held there that evening. Also, jazz clubs are cool to go to unless it is on a Sunday or Monday night...that idea was shot down really fast.  So we found this club called Astoria it is on Leicester Square.  It was a cool placed that played really fun 80's music!...which is always good to dance to :D!!!! So that day I went in search of some black boots that I could wear and so I could stop borrowing my friends.  Well, I found this really cool pare at Oxfam - think goodwill.  These black boots are cowboy style with a heel....and silly me i wore them out that night.  So we go out, we have fun at the club, then we take the Night bus back to the flats.
When we get off at our stop my feet were hurting really really bad, so doing the logical thing I, Ashley, take off my boots to walk the little bit to the flat.  Not a bright idea at all!!! somewhere between taking my boots off and walking in the front door of the apartment building I manage to cut the bottom of my foot! Oh and it is bleeding like I have never seen before! So after making it all the way up to the attic were I live, I hobble into the bathroom and run hot water over it and try to get it to stop bleeding, which I do pretty quickly.  Then I walked on it and it starts bleeding yet again..gravity gotta love it! so i get that to stop and I go to bed...oh and i never felt anything cut me.

Next morning the heel is to sore to walk on so I walk around the flat on the ball of my right foot all day.  Finally around five/six i go to soak it in the tub and to clean it up.  Once I get all the dry blood off from around it i think i see something in it.  Sooo...I get out and ask if anyone can help me and my flatmates are eating dinner and say sure just let us finish...i say okay and sit on the couch.  I then feel my foot is kinda wet.  The cut has started bleeding yet again.  So we decided that I should go to the walk-in-clinic/ER.  we get there and i get called back probably 45 mins after I have arrived...not bad.  They take x-rays to make sure that there is nothing in the cut, which there was not, and they seal the wound with glue stuff and bandage it and they tell me I cant walk on it for another 24 hrs. so no class tomorrow.  So I finally leave and 1.5hrs after we (Sadie, Emily, and Liz came with me) came...not bad!

Moral of the story don't take your boots off until you have entered the front door of your apartment building!

AND..... since next week is fall break there wont be a post for a while...i really don't want to lug my laptop around Italy and it might break, which would not be good and then i would be sad :( BUT i will take my journal SO i can keep track of all the things that I do! the good, the bad, and the ugly!

love ya MMMUUUAAHH!

Oxford!

Hey all!

So this past Friday I went to Oxford with the group! It was so cold: 49 degrees cold!!!! and for the rest of the week it is going to be low 60's high 50's....brrr and this is only October!!!! at least I have me coat now!!! :D

Anyway back in Oxford....we took a tour around the city and went to some of the different colleges that comprise Oxford University like: Christ Church ( were some of the 1st Harry Potter movie was filmed) and where Lewis Carroll - he wrote Alice in Wonderland andThrough the Looking Glass - taught! As we continued to walk we past by the school where J.R.R. Tolkien taught and where C.S. Lewis taught at as well.

Christ Church College founded by Cardinal Wolsey - yes the one that was during the time of Henry VIII! Not only that but this is where Lewis Carroll lived with his family and taught... his daughter Alice was his inspiration for Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass!

Merlton - J.R.R. Tolkien taught here!

The beginning of the Golden Compass was shot here at Essex ( i think that is the name) College - it is where Lyria lived!

sorry about it being sideways! but this is Magdalene - pronounced Maudlin - this is where C.S. Lewis taught! in fact when you walk into the school there are all of these statues and one is Mr. Thomnas (?) the Faun! and other characters - i actually didn't go there i just saw it from a distance the same with Merlton.

Oxford is a very lovely place!  You have the bustling town center on one hand and then one the other you have these big meadows where there is a very outside of a town feel.  Then we went to the Turf Tavern where supposedly Bill Clinton inhaled illegal substances.

After Lunch we went to Christ Church to tour it!

The quadrangle - it is all of the student and faculty housing.

The steps in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, when they first arrive at Hogwarts before entering into the Great Hall!

Me Standing on the Steps!!!!!!!!!

What the modeled the dinning hall after in Harry Potter!

Look! it is Henry and Elizabeth... being in the presence of originals is mind blowing!

After touring Christ Church College, I made my way over to Alice's Shop where all things having to do with Lewis Carroll and Alice stories are sold at ridiculous pricing! I came out with two things a book of his complete works and a present for Mar! Then I made my way back out- having to make it through a sea of pushy Chinese tourist-  to find Lisa, Jen, and Ruth who I was with after the touring of C.C.C. and we walked back to the coach to go back to London!

The next post will be from Italy!!! hurrah for fall break!!!!!!

Love y'all tons and bunches!

Scotland! redux!

So this past weekend, we went up to Scotland for a nice little holiday! We departed on Thursday via a train at Kings Cross Station - and for you HP Fans that is where the 9 and 3/4 platform is but i did not have time to search for it sorry.  Our train left at about 10 and it was a 4.5 hrs train ride into Edinburgh.  The English countryside was so beautiful! and tons of sheep!  One could take over the world and conquer the grass with all the sheep that I saw this past weekend! Once we arrived in Edi. we were meet by our city tour guide and everyone was shocked and excited that he was in a kilt! Me, I was completely unfazed by it.  I've seen better looking people in kilts! So he took us around the city and we stopped at Hollyroad Palace, which is at the opposite end of the Royal Mile from the Castle.  Then we saw Parliament, strange building. Then we made our way down Princess street and saw where the man who wrote Treasure Island grew up and most likely got his inspiration for the book.  After the tour we made our way to the Mercure Point Hotel, where we stayed! It was very nice (I forgot to take pics of it sorry).  Then I went and had dinner with Lisa, Jen, and Ruth at Darios a very good Italian restaurant and we made our way down Princess Street and hit up Accessorize! I managed to control my wallet while in there, I'm not really sure how I did that but I did!  Then we went back to the Hotel and went to sleep!
The next morning, Friday, we left on our Haggis Tour of the Highlands! I was very excited for this.  It was so nice to be able to go back!  Our first stop was at Dunkeld Cathedral.  It was very beautiful.  I don't really remember what the significance of this place was.  We then drove on to some Jacobite  barracks!  These barracks are falling down and we were able to climb around like monkeys! It was fun.  Also, there were some very beautiful views of the Highlands in which we were entering!!! After that, we made our way into Aviemore for lunch.  Aviemore is a small town... smaller than Stirling for those of you who know the town/ for those that don't Stirling is around the size of Georgetown, if that! After we left Aviemore we were on a mission to find 17 white horses, when we found these horses we would be able to have Deep Scottish Love! While we learning about Deep Scottish Love we were making our way to Culldugon Battlefield.  This is were the Jacobites fell against the British for the last time in there quest for freedom from the crown.  Also Bonny Prince Charlie was leading the Jacobites at this time as well.  It was after this battle that Flora McDonald helped Bonny Prince Charles escape out of Scotland! If she didn't do this we would not of had the Flora McDonald's Fancy dance!... ohh what would the world have been like with out that killer dance! Once we left the Battle Field we raced up to Loch Ness to catch the 4 o'clock boat ride on the loch.  I searched and searched for Nessie but I could not find her... sadness! Then we made our way to the hostel were we would spend the night! The hostel was located in Fort Augustus, which is not far from the Loch.  The hostel had a campy vibe, lots of bunk beds, and it was surrounded by trees and was only a 4 min. walk to Loch Ness!
Next morning, Saturday, we made our way back down out of the Highlands back to Edi! Our first stop for the day was at the Commando Monument, which has Ben Nevis as a back drop! Ben Nevis is the tallest Mountain in the UK! However, I could not really see it due to the low foggy clouds!  Then we made our way to walk on Ben Nevis, which is were parts of Braveheart were filmed.  After that lovely walk in the cold rain, we went to Morrison's to eat...yes we ate at the Grocery store! After Lunch, we made our way to Glencoe! this place had such an eerie vibe, which was most like induced by the weather- rainny, cold, and foggy low clouds - or maybe it was because I had been listening to the song that Ashleigh, Anne, and Jo Anna sang that one year at Spring Festival, or maybe it was a combo of all of those things.  After Glencoe we made our way to Hamish who is a WILD & SEXY "harree-coo" or hairy cow.  He was sooooo cute I wanted to bring him home with me.  I didn't think my mom would like that or that he would fit in my suitcase without exceeding the weight limit.  We also fed Hamish (ill put the videos up later). After Hamish we made our way into Stirling to see.....the bridge....really the bridge that was the best they could do! I was very disappointed by this!  After we saw the bridge we made our way back to Edi.  We had the evening to ourselves.  I was extremely tired so I went and had dinner and then went back and hung out in Liz and Robin's room watching The Lord of the Rings Return of the King before the debate...which i went to my room and fell asleep to the debate!
On Sunday, I went up to Edi Castle!!! It was gorgeous and had amazing views of the city!!! It has been one of the only places/castles that i visited where you could take pics (in some places) on the inside! After exploring the Castle quit throughly.  I made my way back down from the Castle and to the hotel to wait for the coach to take us to the train station!  We then found out from the coach drive that there might not be a train from Edi to London!!! We might have to take another Coach all the way!...it is a very long drive! However, we did have a train!!! but it would be a 6.5 hrs train ride back due to engineer work on the lines and it was Sunday.  We also had to change trains at Newcastle! The train ride went fairly smoothly until we got to York! Where a bunch of really roady dance girls got on!!! It was a long very long train ride back to London from York.  When  we finally arrived back at King's Cross Station at 10 at night we had to go and catch the tube back to Earl's Court to get back to the flats - it is about a 30/35 min tube ride and then a short walk from the station to the front door of the flats...but im on the top floor in the attic so that is about another 5 min (due to being extremely tired and exhausted from the weekend and carrying my suitcase up all of those stairs as well)...I finally walked in the door at 11 o'clock! Then I went to bed

That is all of the goings on in Scotland! love ya

Okay i know im late starting this but....

Okay yes I know that I have already been over here a while and haven't done this and i should have started this thing ages ago! I really decided that I should do this when I was writing that really long email about all of my happenings in Scotland that this would be so much better! Especially when I go to places like Paris, Prague,Amsterdam, and Italy I know I'm slow on the uptake... but whatevs! Sooo....I will give an overview of all that has happened so far over here across the pond! All pics for this post are on facebook! :D

Week 1! - The Globe!
so yeah we went to the Globe.  IT was AMAZING!!!! It looks how it would have looked in Shakespeare's time.  The only thing that is wrong it that the original Globe was in a different spot - like 300 yards a way - but there is already a building there in use so the people who were in charge of reconstructing the Globe built it as close as possible.  It is made out of oak like the original one and it has the same lime and goat hair wall plastering that was used in Shakespeare's day.  This is the only thatched building in London since the great fire.  However due to that, on the roof there are automatic water sprinklers should the roof catch fire.... those wouldn't have been there when Mr. S. put on his plays. And for my theatre class, We went and saw A Midsummer's Night Dream.  We were groundlings for 5GBP for this performance, which is the best way to see a show there if you ever get the chance

Week 2! - Stonehenge and Bath!
So the next friday we left for Stonehenge and Bath.  We drove for about an hour until we arrived at Stonehenge.  It was lovely well the structure and the grass not the weather! Gale force winds are not really my thing. The day that we went to Stonehenge was the worst weather in 100 yrs. just my luck! While trying to enjoy the all of wonders that Stonehenge has to offer I had to watch my umbrella.  1) to make sure that i didn't let my grip get to slack and it would fly away! 2) i had to keep my umbrella for flipping inside out! So I finally do the smart thing and give up on using my umbrella! and take in all of the wonders of Stonehenge... oh and keep an eye on my friend from running and trying to steal a sheep.
After we made our way back to the coach we headed for Bath to see the Roman Baths! Once we arrived in Bath we were supposed to take a walking tour around the city. However, due to flash floods and heavy rain, we drove the coach around the city and saw all of the highlights.  This city has a thing for pigs! they are everywhere.  The pigs are like the cows that invaded Houston a few years back for the Cow Parade. The pigs, however, are permanent members of the community. They actually have something to do with the founding of the city, i just don't remember the story! After we have been all around the city by coach, we alight from it and head to the roman baths! These were exactly like you think - for all who have had latin classes at stes - there is even a statue with SPQR on it!!! The main bath actually still exists and still bubbles from the spring! After spending about an hour with this large cell phone talkie thing glued to my ear, I found my way out and grabbed some lunch - a jacket potato (baked potato) with curry chicken... yummy! Then I had a bit of time to wander about the city.  After that I made my way back to the coach, and we left for London!

Week 3! - Kew Gardens!
The Kew Gardens are in London in zone 4... which means that you can get there my the tube, which is always nice! These gardens are on 300 acres of land...it is nearly impossible to see it all in one day, unless you just walk really fast...but even then i don't see how it can be done! there were lots of birds there! I just sort of hung out at the lake in the middle and enjoyed the beautiful scenery!

Week 4! - Brighton!
So this week we went to Brighton - it was for our British Life and Culture class.  It was about an hour train ride from Victoria Station.  Once we arrived in Brighton we made our way down to the beach and went for a dip.  By dip, I mean i stood with the water barely covering my feet! It was super cold! After we took lots of group pictures standing in this freezing cold water, our teacher pointed out which direction Texas was in...i thought about swimming for it! But I don't think that I would make it!  We then left the beach in search of the Royal Pavilion, which was George IV's pleasure palace! It really does look like a palace that was thought up after someone had an opium induced dream or better yet it look like the palace was transported out of 1001 Arabian Nights.  The only disappointed thing was that only very little was on show.  After exploring, as much as we could, we went and had lunch.  A group of us went to this little italian restaurant and boy was it delicious!! It was sooooooooooo GOOOD!!!!! It was probably the best Risotto I have ever had with fresh seafood!!!! After a very filling lunch we made our way to meet the rest of the class at the Brighton pier! It has been converted into an amusement park think Kemmah! and after exploring this we left and made our way back to London!

That was the first 4 weeks of all my doings and goings around! Scotland gets its own post! :D
